Tastes of Bronzeville: A Healthy Meal From a Black-Owned Business

Help me give my students the experience of delicious flavors of their own community through healthy, locally made meals from a Black-owned restaurant. Let them taste culture, health, and history in every bite!

My Project

This year, my students will take part in a virtual celebration that honors their hard work, identity, and connection to their community. As part of this event, each student will receive a nutritious, delicious boxed lunch and smoothie—prepared by Ain’t She Sweet Cafe, a Black-owned business on Chicago’s South Side.

There will be no in-person or off-site components to this event.

All meals will be delivered directly to our school during regular lunch hours, and our celebration will take place virtually. Students will engage in a guided online reflection and cultural discussion tied to the meal, wellness, and the importance of supporting local businesses that reflect their community and heritage.

Our virtual event will occur within 2–8 months from the date this project is submitted, in alignment with DonorsChoose requirements.

This meal isn’t just food—it’s a message that our students and their community matter. By connecting culture, health, and entrepreneurship, we are showing students that excellence lives within them and around them.
