My Students
My students are in the eighth and ninth grades, are diagnosed with multiple dissibilites, and attend a public school for students with disabilities in Brooklyn, NY.
Our students are a diverse group of learners who continuously push themselves to enhance their social and academic skills.
Each student has a vibrant cultural and social background comprised of a family history as well as influences from their family culture, life in the different city neighborhoods they are from, and the many different people they have met and will meet along their learning journey. Our students are born this way. They are born filled with wonder, having the ability to see the world from a different point of view, and an innate love for learning. All they need is an opportunity.
The students are continuously adapting and developing their academic and social skills as they adjust to learning in-person and virtually. They deserve the tools needed to reach their highest educational and social potential.
My Project
Our learners benefit from, and are accustomed to hands-on learning activities. The students make use of many different picture cues and symbols to facilitate the communication of their wants and needs as well as acquire academic skills. Using task boxes and setting up independent reading comprehension learning stations will allow fo more imagery in student learning activities. Stations will also provide learners with more chances to practice independence in the classroom by self-facilitating learning during the school day.
“To find yourself, think for yourself.” -Socrates
The Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will be used to purchase task boxes and reading comprehension assessments for our classroom. Using task boxes and reading comprehension assessments, our class will have the materials needed to make our self-facilitated stations a reality. Using these stations, students will have even more time during the day to think and act independently while completing organized and leveled learning activities.
