Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach preschool to 16 three and four year old students with autism or severe developmental delays in a self-contained classroom with a low-student to teacher ratio in a low income, high poverty community of 22,000 students. One hundred percent of my students receive free breakfast and lunch and some receive supplemental food that they bring home. Our students face challenges in and out of the classroom. Many of my students are non-verbal or have emerging language skills. They arrive at school eager to learn and we celebrate all of their successes, no matter how small.

The everyday challenge is to engage and sustain attention to the simplest play and functional tasks.

Their language skills are just beginning to develop, some are non-verbal learners or emerging language learners. All students have an IEP. In addition to their severe developmental delays, many of my students come from families where English is their second language.

My Project

MY project is to created a set of Tasks Boxes for each of my students based on their goals and objectives. Basic supplies such as crayons and glue sticks are difficult for many inner city families to obtain. A task box activity is short and structured which maintains the child's attention. An activity fits in the bin or in a protector sheet may be used to work on a particular objective in school or in a lesson sent home. Some activities are sent home for remote learner to do via TEAMS or with a parent. Activities are laminated to last longer.

To give you better idea of a Task Box activity, a child has a sort by color goal.

In the task bin a child has plastic bears in four colors and four plates, one of each color. The student will look at her work schedule, get up and retrieve a box, complete the sorting activity, then return the box to the shelf.

Benefits for using task boxes for autistic children are great.

Task boxes compartmentalize each activity, which make them easier to complete. Task boxes appeal to a child's desire for routine and order, making it easier to attend to the activity without distraction. Most importantly, they encourage independence by breaking the task into smaller pieces and address sensory issues.
