My students need steps, balance beams, a hopscotch carpet, limbo game, and other equipment to incorporate active movement throughout the day.

My Students
The students I serve are 3rd-5th grade academically/intellectually gifted students. I have yet to find a topic that they do not want to explore. From chess to jury trials, the American Revolution to Algebra, and most definitely anything technology related.
As a green certified school, we emphasize healthy living and environmentally friendly practices.
Last school year, my 4th grade students completed a project based learning unit that focused on ways to make our school a healthier place. They had some great ideas for increasing the activity level of students. I hope that we can make some of those ideas come to life during their 5th grade year.
My Project
The idea is really quite simple. My students want to create obstacle courses in their classrooms and maybe even the hallway in order to be more active during the school day. Last year, they read an article about a school that changed its physical layout and the choices in the cafeteria. This article inspired a project based learning unit where the students came up with ideas to improve our school in a similar way.
The idea for the classroom and hallway obstacle course was born.
Not only will my students use the obstacle course but they will also be able to design and redesign it over and over again. I cannot wait for them to see the balance beam, limbo game, hopscotch carpet, stairs, and all the other active movement materials that they can choose from to create their obstacle course. One day they might climb the steps and jump down on the way out of the classroom. Another day, they might throw a beanbag to play hopscotch and then limbo out of the door. Every time we leave or enter the classroom there will be a task. The poly vinyl markers and river stones will provide endless patterns for the students to follow. There really is no limit to the activities the students will come up with engaging both their mind and bodies to be as healthy as possible.
For every transition during the day, students will be doing more than just walking. No more lining up and walking in an orderly quiet line. Since this idea came straight from the students I am really excited for their reaction when they see that a teacher listened to their ideas and other people pitched in to make their idea come true.
