Talking with Technology

My students need assistive technology in order to successfully engage and learn from the curriculum. Some of my student cannot speak or write, therefore iPads with cases will help.

My Students

Our day is filled with a variety of fun learning activities which does not include much technology. I want my students to be better communicators, and with the help of iPad and the communication apps that are out there, they can use this technology as their voice. Communication is very important.

Middle Ridge is a Title I school with approximately 90% free and reduced-price lunch population, however we have the best caring teachers and staff in Newton County.

The school is in the heart of Covington, where we have students coming to us from very low income and under-educated families. We have a high population of special needs students in our school, but this makes us unique, because we strive to educate them just like everyone else. In my class, I have 9 bright, loving, special needs students, each unique in their own way. Each of them has their own special way of learning; most are nonverbal. Being nonverbal brings challenges of its own, but we create ways to teach them through sign language and pictures. With the use of technology, I can help them to learn another way to communicate.

My Project

Teaching these nonverbal students to speak is challenging; however I use the technology I have to teach basic life skills and communication skills in order for them to be successful. We go out into the community to teach life skills and how to communicate with a very verbal society. We use picture cues and social stories to practice ordering food, buying items, and paying for the items. I have been selected to participate in study with a program call Bluebee Pals, which are stuffed animals that use Bluetooth and selected apps that interact and help kids to speak and learn. The iPads will help with this. The Bluebee Pals are an Assistive Technology tool used to engage students in learning and socialization. They help increase communication, following directions, and turn-taking. iPads are instrumental in classroom settings and, along with the Bluebee Pals, are considered a leading Assistive Technology classroom.

The use of technology, such as iPads, is showing great promise in helping children who are challenged with conditions such as Autism or other disabilities learn to communicate more effectively.

There are three separate benefits emerging when it comes to technology and kids who struggle with communication: receptive language skills, expressive language skills, and social interactions. With these iPads and the Bluebell Pals, I can reach these needs more effectively.
