Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Young children learn through play. The materials I am requesting will help my students be able to learn how to talk and engage with others. But, we can practice learning to talk in more of a play scenario. We can practice animal sounds with the barn and animals, name the animals while playing, talk about the animals going in, on, and under; and so much more.
Using pretend play and other play materials encourage the students to come to the rug and play thus allowing the teacher to model and teach good speech and language.
The toys allow me to see exactly what the student is already able to communicate, as well as provide a more natural communication environment for the student.
What is a problem is the district doesn't have enough funds to provide teachers with all the materials they need to engage students in learning. So, when 3 and 4-year-olds come into my therapy room, I have to scramble to find something more engaging for them to do, and most of the time I am still left with buying the materials myself.
Even though there are plenty of workbooks and picture cards available for first through fourth grade, the district doesn't offer much for the prekindergarten and kindergarten students in speech therapy. By having more pretend play resources, my younger students will be able to engage in more naturalistic communication with the speech therapist increasing their learning!
