Talking to the Board is Boring! Document Camera for Physics
My students need a document camera so that I can model solving physics problems with them while facing them and projecting my voice into the room, instead of the board.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love to experience the hands-on excitement of physics, but calculating complicated physics problems is a struggle for them. Writing on the board, I abandon them to confusion. Working face-to-face, I can read their expressions and respond to hesitation with encouragement and explanations.
My students are sweet, generous, energetic, hilarious, and optimistic.
They working hard to beat the odds as students of color in a low-income, urban college-prep school. They want to become doctors, lawyers, engineers, and businessowners. They love their families and the know that a good education can help them to provide for their families and make informed, independent decisions. They are committed to attending a 4-year university after high school.
Relationships are essential with my students. Their lives, both personal and academic, are full of challenges and uncertainty, at a time in their lives when they are only beginning to develop the maturity to respond to such challenges. They deserve my full support and attention throughout the class period so that I can respond to their needs in the most understanding and constructive way possible.
My Project
Working face-to-face with my students using a document camera, providing encouragement or correction, leverages the strength of my relationships with them and invites their active participation, rather than working on the board by myself and turning my back to them. A student who is lost in a problem might give up when my back is turned. A smile and eye contact from me, a hand signal or simple correction can be the difference between understanding the lesson and being lost; between confidence and self-doubt; between determination and giving up.
Having a document camera will allow me to capitalize on my relationships with students, improve my awareness of their needs and make me more responsive in supporting them in the academic and personal challenges in the classroom.
That kind of support can be the difference between learning physics or not. Success in my class is essential on their path to college!
