My Students
For many, many years, people have been enthralled by the tales of long ago and the adventures in the Iliad. The book Black Ships Before Troy make this story accessible to my sixth grade readers. Even my reluctant readers enjoy a good tall tale or two.
My students' varied backgrounds and heritages combine to make a classroom that is rich in diversity.
Not only are they culturally diverse, they are very different in their interests in reading and reading material. One thing we can all agree on is an interest in tall tales and folklore. Adding an art project as a response to the literature increases their interests in reading.
My Project
My students need 30 copies each of Black Ships Before Troy and The Tale of the Mandarin Ducks. They also need the book American Tall Tales and oil pastel sets. These resources will help my students practice their reading skills and help them think critically about the meaning behind the tales. They will look at the author's craft of storytelling so that they may also learn to tell their own personal stories.
Adding these resources to our classroom library will broaden the versatility of the students' literary experiences.
These books will encourage all of my students to be life-long readers. Your contribution will make all the difference.
