My Students

Remember those beginning of the school year jitters? I always begin each new school year reading "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" by Judy Blume. It has always been a personal favorite, and provides a fun way to introduce reading a shared novel.

My students are fourth graders that attend a Title I elementary school in Virginia.

They are eager to learn and hard workers, but often struggle with current grade level material. I find that many of my students shy away from chapter books, because they think they are too hard or will take too long to read. Our school does not have the funds to provide class sets of novels, and what we do have is outdated. I use our class "book club" time to motivate and expose them to authors that they could read independently. Finding novels that keep their attention can be a struggle, but "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" has always been a success.

My Project

Having a class set of these books will have a tremendous effect on my classroom. Each student would have the opportunity to have their own copy to follow along as we read, as well as participate in read aloud. It will make the activity more meaningful if they are able to listen as well as see the text on the page. It also allows for them to conveniently reread the book later on in the year if there are multiple copies. This project would also give me the opportunity to teach reading strategies throughout the story.

In years past, my students have enjoyed this book immensely.

This project will boost my students' reading confidence as they begin fourth grade, and help them realize that they possess the ability to read more chapter books throughout the school year. A class set of these books will make a huge difference for my students this fall and for my students in the future. Thank you for your support!!!
