Taking TIME to Read Nonfiction in First Grade

Help me give my students opportunities to read non-fiction texts with a year-long subscription to TIME For Kids magazine

My Students

The students in my class are first graders, with a mix of general education students and students with disabilities. I teach these students along with a special education teacher and a part-time TA.

Every year, students are entering first grade with an even greater love of nonfiction texts.

They are curious and want to learn about our world, from animals to holidays to science. They find joy in sharing new facts and information with their peers, teachers, and family members.

My Project

Our classroom has a limited number of nonfiction and informational texts. Students will have opportunities to read this genre and experience reading it in TIME For Kids magazine. Students will be able to explore (identify, name, and explain the purpose) of nonfiction text features. Additionally, they will have opportunities to wonder and ask questions about the topic of the articles. Students will be able to identify new facts.

In addition, students will be able to take the magazines home to share their new learning with their families.

Please help us to balance our classroom library by providing more opportunities for students to read non-fiction texts.
