My students are curious learners, constantly asking questions, digging deeper, and trying to understand the world around them. They seek meaning rather than just comprehension, and are willing to do the work to get there. As an Environmentally focused school, my students are also always on the lookout for better ways to keep our planet and ourselves healthier.
These are kids who care; they care about the world around them and how their actions impact more than just themselves.
When an answer isn't simple or straight-forward, we learn how to use science in order to gather information and make positive changes for our school, community, and the environment.
My Project
Now, more than ever, we are taking learning into the “outdoor classroom”, and in our case, one outdoor classroom in particular has been buzzing all summer—“Classroom Bee”! We have a hive of honey bees on campus which act not only as a hands-on STEM project, but that also act as living ambassadors for our native pollinators. In this outdoor learning space, students have the opportunity to observe the honey bees hard at work, and whether studying animal adaptations for survival or how humans draw inspiration from nature, the bees always have something to teach.
From spring feeding, to fall honey harvest, students will take an active role in beekeeping.
Not only is this an introduction to animal husbandry, giving students insight into creative careers in STEM and agriculture, it also gives them a chance to take on a unique leadership role as well--8th grade student leaders will work with 1st grade buddies in caring for and maintaining the bee hives, giving a unique opportunity to “bookend” their school experience, as our school is Kindergarten through 8th grade.
To get the most out of this ongoing project however, students will need safety gear, including bee suits, veils, and gloves. This will not only prevent them from receiving off-putting bee stings, but will allow them greater comfort while getting up close with the hives. –Safety is our number one priority with our Junior Beekeepers, and we’re looking to have a collection of high-grade protective equipment in a variety of sizes to fit our youngest to our oldest student scientists.
