My students need books that cover math word problems at different reading levels so that they can approach math and feel successful about their math skills without frustration due to struggles with reading.

My Students
We are a neighborhood school on the south side of the city that is bursting at the seems. Our current population is about 400 students and of that about one third of our populations is a diverse learner and receives specialized services. We are an elementary school and have Pre-K through 8th grades. We have an inclusive learning program which starts in preschool and makes a huge impact on our students and the way that they see the world and the members of their community in a very important way. Our neighborhood has a lot of pride around our school as the majority of our students have parents that graduated from our school and our community keeps itself wrapped tightly around us.
Our students are an amazing blend of academic, adventurous, athletic, and curious.
They have big dreams and know that we have high expectations for them. My students are constantly asking questions not only about curriculum but also about themselves and their place in the world and how they can make the world a better place.
My Project
As as intervention specialist, I find joy in being able to work with every student in the building throughout the year. This year, with an influx of new students, I am observing that my students understand the math concepts but their struggles with literacy skills create roadblocks, which keep them from being able to approach the math in the problems. Having books that cover the same math skills but allow students to have various levels of reading while covering the same skill is a way for all of my students to be able to gather together in math without their struggles in reading causing struggles within the classroom, thereby removing the roadblocks.
My students are amazing and regardless of struggles they are working hard to improve their math skills; and being able to work through different types of word problems will help my students to strategize and to foster community around math within our classrooms.
These sets will allow me and my students to be able to create class conversations about math and working on skill levels where each student can feel comfortable about the problems that they are working on. It will also allow my students to be able to experience independence and drive the conversations within their working groups as these books will also allow me to have students working in small groups together and also allow me to pull them to work 1-on-1. I love working with word problems with students because it is an excellent way to expose their mathematical thinking and I will also be able to hand off my work to the reading intervention specialist once I am able to determine what level my students are consistently reading the word problems on.
