Taking the Fear Out of Math through Manipulatives and Sense-Making!
Help me give my students hands-on math materials so that they can begin their seventh-grade math journey by solidifying their understanding of rational numbers.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students brim with untapped potential. They are curious, creative and love hands-on projects. Though they all have special learning needs, not one of them can be defined by any one label. They are each unique and a work-in-progress, much like their teacher!
My class is made up of 12 students who actively participate in keeping our classroom community inclusive and respectful.
In my class we work on improving and strengthening our habits of learning - perseverance, active listening, following directions, respectful disagreement, asking and answering questions, and so on.
My Project
Math is often frustrating for my students with learning disabilities. By the time we get past rational numbers and proportional relationships, they are ready to give up. Many of their challenges are because of a shaky understanding of numbers in general. At the beginning of the year, I usually discover that my students have gaps in their knowledge of fractions and how to manipulate them.
I plan to begin this academic year with a series of activities using concrete number lines and fraction towers(linking cubes).
Specifically, students will be taught to reason about numbers - whole numbers, fractions and decimals - through a series of placement activities on the number lines. The linking cubes will help my students visualize simple operations with fractions. Such hands-on activity will be followed by reflection and sense-making so that students are able verbalize and express in writing what just happened on the number line. This transformation of a concrete experience to a more abstract, mathematical form will be at the core of my teaching for the first few weeks.
I thank you so much for supporting us in my quest to change my students' perception about math.
