Taking Students to the Street (via the Wall Street Journal)
My students need 5 Wall Street Journal Newspapers Subscriptions to connect economic concepts to real world current events.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. D.'s classroom raised $335
This project is fully funded
In my classroom, I seek to bring the opportunities present in our most affluent communities to the inner city. I teach 12th grade economics at a high-needs school in which 98% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
My continuous challenge with my students is their lack of exposure to subjects outside of their immediate surroundings. While we can easily relate our economics concepts to their shopping at the mall or the black market drug sales in their communities, I struggle with illustrating to them the importance of the Federal Reserve, interest rates, fiscal policy decisions, international exchange rates, etc. These are topics they rarely encounter outside of my classroom.
The Wall Street Journal Newspaper will provide my students with invaluable exposure to the role that economics plays in our society. They will be more invested in the material if they can see that their mastery of our concepts will increase their ability to understand the world around them.
By funding our project, you will be giving my students perspective. As they prepare to enter the workforce and/or college, this awareness will increase their chances to successfully compete with their counterparts, even those from the most privileged backgrounds.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
