My students need to see themselves succeed. These classes in Spinning Bikes will give students a space to achieve goals they set, plus connect with each other and learn new body awareness.

My Students
Everybody has a story to tell and everyone wants to be heard. It's with this philosophy that we approach our work in The Lab, a program serving urban youth in special education.
The students with whom we work have the educational label EBD (Emotional- behavioral disorder) and attend school in small self-contained classrooms, due to the fact that their behaviors prevent them from achieving success in a mainstream classroom setting.
These youth are affected by a variety of social and mental health challenges, including post-traumatic stress disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiance disorder, anxiety and/or depression. For many of our students, their behavioral and mental health struggles are linked to challenging circumstances of living in poverty. 85% of students in our EBD programs receive free and reduced lunch; the majority (80%) are male and youth of color, primarily African American.
My Project
Kathy, our guest instructor, is an experienced fitness professional and social worker. She writes: "I developed IGNITE, a mind-body cardio workout, because I believe the bike is a tool that teaches us how to surrender, stay steady, and lean into the crisis of a sprint. It allows the hill to become our teacher. It teaches us the sheer exhilaration and joy of going down a hill after climbing up and is a great way to experience how fast we can shift from pain and fear to joy and steadiness. You use the body as your teacher, with the understanding that life is happening for you, not to you."
Spinning will not only allow students a physical release from confining days in the classroom, but a chance to push themselves, find success, and reflect on their emotional struggles.
The Lab has found incredible success using martial arts, dance and yoga in the past and spinning will be a strong addition to our wellness curricula.
With your help, we can continue to support these students to gain the courage to speak about their lives, gain healthy coping strategies, and find success at school!
