Naturalist John Burroughs wrote that, "the best place to observe nature is where you are," and I couldn't agree more. That's why I want to take science education outside and show my elementary school students--many of them low-income and who hail from 35 different countries--that nature abounds even in an urban environment.
Many of my students don't have the money to go on elaborate vacations. Many of them don't have the opportunity to go to summer camps and enrichment programs. As a teacher I want to broaden both their horizons and let them discover that Brooklyn isn't just asphalt and traffic.
To help them see that beauty resides in the urban environment and can give us a more balanced experience of urban life, I want to hang feeders and attract birds to our school grounds. As my students see these birds and become attached to them, I also hope to groom environmental stewards of the future.
By attracting birds to our school grounds, students will gain an appreciation for, and experiences with, nature--something fewer and fewer children are having these days. Children will be given the opportunity to look forward to seeing birds on a daily basis and hopefully share their discoveries and observations with their families and friends. Please help me broaden and brighten my students' worlds. Thank you.
