My students need a safer and more reliable picnic table to use as an outdoor reading/writing center. The one they currently use has exposed rusted nails, peeling paint, and broken wood panels.

My Students
As a Title I school, my school serves a diverse population of underprivileged students. Approximately 67% of our 700 students (470) receive free or reduced lunch. We have seven families (which impacts appx. 18 students at our school) who are classified as homeless – and that number does not include the 40-50 students who live with grandparents or other extended family members who struggle to care for them. The students in my classroom come to me with varying backgrounds with varying levels of prior knowledge, skills, and needs.
My Project
My students love being able to read and write outside in the Fall and Spring at our picnic table! The old wooden table they currently use has been repaired many times and needs to be replaced. As much as my students enjoy working outside, replacing a picnic table is not in my budget.
Reading and writing outside is something many of my students do not get an opportunity to do at home since they live in low-income apartments.
The excitement of going outside to read and write in the fresh air has many of my young students asking when will it be their turn to go out to the picnic table...how wonderful it is to see children eager to read and write!
More than half of students from low‑income households
