My Students
Raising respectful, healthy children is a tall order, and especially difficult when facing poverty, discrimination, housing challenges, all while being a teenager.
We serve pregnant and parenting teens in San Francisco.
Our students are Latina, African American, and Asian Pacific Islander young women from the city of San Francisco who are pursuing their education despite many odds, including housing transitions, domestic violence, and most of all, people who do not believe they are able to appropriately care for their babies. We have a small, caring program with 5 teachers, a counselor, social worker, nurse and nursery staff. We seek to create a positive school climate, including students in decision-making, providing a flexible academic schedule, and connection to case management, health, and mental health resources. We also provide schoolwide activities to help the students connect to each other in a healthy, positive way and reflect on how their past experiences affect their current behavior and parenting choices.
My Project
Three of ten staff have seen the film "Bully" and believe seeing the film will help them develop a sense of empathy for those who are bullied.
We do have issues with cliques, many times across racial lines. Despite our efforts to provide fieldtrips, game days, and team-building activities, they still need to continue to reflect on how their experiences influence how they view themselves and treat each other.
This film addresses these topics in a poignant and powerful way. We believe our students can handle and benefit from its content in two ways, as teens with their peers and as parents with their own children. We hold parenting classes that include concrete parenting skills, emotional reflection, and character education, all of which are also incorporated throughout their school day in all academic classes by our caring staff. This film would be an extension of our academic and social-emotional programming here at Hilltop as we support our students.
We feel the weight of our work, and it is a tall order to serve two generations of students.
Babies born to our students return to our school nursery at only 3 weeks after birth, and we can foresee their challenges before their life really begins. We also understand at Hilltop that the most important thing these young women can do for their babies is pursue their education. That education includes how they teach their children to respect others, one way of which is to start by seeing this film.
