This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have been given the opportunity to teach the best group of little people imaginable. I looped with them from first to second and am excited to look up with them to third grade this year!
These little people are absolutely amazing.
They face many challenges and hardships that would defeat any average person. They all qualify to receive free lunch, English is a second language for the majority of my class, and many are facing extraordinary challenges at home. My students are not average, however. They are extraordinary!
Despite the many challenges they face, they come to school ready and excited to learn! They come with open minds and open hearts and are the most remarkable and kindhearted people I have had the pleasure to know. This is shown day after day as they request extra time to work in place of recess, show excitement over every lesson or activity I plan, persevere to complete accurate work no matter how long it takes, extend a helping hand to classmates when they need it, and share anything and everything if it is helpful to do so.
My Project
Reading is one of my students' favorite subjects in school. Every day, students get an opportunity to read books on their level with the teacher. These books come in sets of 6 and help the students learn important literacy skills such as summarizing, plot, theme, character traits, and more! In order to be most successful, students need to have high interest in the books they are reading.
Classroom sets of Goosebumps and Matilda will bring guided reading to a whole new level for my students.
Keeping students excited and engaged is key to keeping reading fresh and fun.
We need class sets of Goosebumps and Matilda - engaging books to make guided reading more fun! The Goosebumps series is one of my students' favorite for choice reading, if I could have copies for guided reading they would never want to leave my table! Matilda is a book that has many great teachable moments including character traits, point of view, vocabulary, and more. It is also a highly engaging text that fits in well with the personality of my students.
