Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My young women's club consists of strong, energetic young women who are eager to change the world. The students are aged 14-18 and have been born and raised a city where there is a lot of pressure to be someone "cool", "together" and "pretty". While they understand these pressures exist, they choose to stand together in unity through this club to embrace their true selves. The club started as a way to can participate and discuss topics that would normally be considered taboo elsewhere, and to provide a safe space for girls to be loved, seen and heard.

Girls will have the opportunity to learn how to “take care of themselves” by having access to opportunities that will ultimately empower young women to be confident in their own bodies. Opportunities include: participating in yoga classes, doing spa-like activities like a facial, going hiking, and participating in conversations to create healing and support through the text Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur.

In Their Own Words

ln this retreat, we want to create an environment where girls can feel the pampering without feeling guilt or being called selfish and take a distance from the pressures and expectations of society and have an all-girls day. Within this retreat we hope to have self-confidence building activities, trust building activities, maintenance stations, wishing tree session, and other reflective activities. As a form of self love therapy that will increase the level of self confidence and awareness of themselves.

By creating a safe space, we hope to discuss topics ranging from increasing self-love to workshops; even participant ideas, like a makeup tip session. We aim to provide a space where girls can feel comfortable being themselves and doing things they want to do. We are taking this opportunity to have girls take time for themselves, that otherwise due to cultural expectations of being an additional maternal selfless figure, would be denied.

As young women of color, we are not just students, we are caretakers, we are athletes, we are voices in our community, we are so many things that we often lose sight of what we should be. We lose sight of the most important thing: ourselves. This is reflected in girls’ low self-esteem and self-less decisions we take on a day to day basis. We want to bring our voice and life back to the forefront.
