Taking Care Of The Planet

My students need resources, including books and a composting kit, that will help them with their unit of inquiry on sharing the planet.

My Students

Did you know that worms can eat your garbage? Our students will learn about recycling and managing their own vermicomposting bin.

We are a new French immersion school located in the Midwest.

Our students spend their days reading, writing, and speaking in French, and they are doing an amazing job in their language acquisition! Are we a private school? "Non!" A gifted school? "Mais non!" We are a 100% free charter school that believes that learning another language is part of a larger goal of preparing our kids to be leaders. Our students come from all backgrounds, and this diversity is what makes us who we are. We have a great group of community members and families supporting our mission, and hope you will join us!

My Project

To support our spring unit on Taking Care of the Planet, we are requesting a worm composting system. With this system, students can add banana peels or other food waste, along with shredded newspaper, which the worms will eat and turn into compost we can use for our plants. We also requested children's books on recycling, using natural resources wisely, the planet, and what happens to our garbage. These books will be shared by our four Kindergarten classes so that our students can get the most out of our unit.

This project will support our students' learning in a meaningful way.

Instead of just imagining ways to recycle, they will instead get a first-hand look at how table scraps can be made into compost. The resource books will be used to support our learning and lead to more inquiry.
