I have a first grade class in a high poverty area of a large city. They are a wide range of readers from nonreaders to highly motivated, fluent readers. Five of my students are special education inclusion students. Six of my students are non readers but can make the sounds of letters. There are also 7 students who have mastered basic sounds and need to work on higher level activities. The rest of my class is average and still needs guidance in the basic skills.
We have a small classroom that is overcrowded with students and the centers that our school system requires, but not enough space for independent or small group work. The children bump into each other trying to access the centers or materials and this causes stress. We need to be able to work in less crowded areas.
My children would benefit from the pocket chart centers we requested because they are portable and organized into a small space. The materials cover a wide range of skills and can reach most of the learners independently. We can adapt them to small group work or higher level skill by tweaking a few of the directions.
You can help us reach this level of comfort and independence by funding our grant. The children will be able to learn in less crowded spaces and at a level they can be successful at learning. Please help us obtain these centers for our classroom and make the learning experience less stressful and more fun and my students will flourish and grow into better readers. Thank you.
