I am a third grade teacher at PS169, a title one school in Sunset Park Brooklyn, New York. As part of the Grade 3 curriculum, the work we do in Social Studies involves a comprehensive study of the United States, the continents around the world, China, Africa, and Mexico. Unfortunately, researching these countries becomes difficult because of the materials we are lacking.
The difficulty comes, in part, from the unavailability of books appropriate for third grade children on the topic. The greatest difficulty is finding an appropriate book only to discover that we do not have the budget to buy it.
In order for our students to really take ownership of their studies and practice the research skills taught in accordance with our units, it is important to have the selection of books dealing with the topic. With the purchase of these items, the children will be able to have a hands-on experience through wonderful books, fun games, and resources.
