Help me give my students a literary experience where they can relate to a main character who is just like them. I hope to continue our schools mission to increase Social Justice literacy through stories like Ghost Boys!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 7th grade students in a high needs inner-city setting. Our school is extremely diverse, with nearly 50 percent living below the poverty line and 70 percent receiving free or reduced price lunch services. In my class, I have students that are either living below the poverty line or teeter slightly above it. My students are incredibly curious, innovative, and creative. They learn best when they are exposed to hands-on experiential learning, and when they can apply the knowledge they've learned in class to a real-life situation.
My Project
My students rarely read about characters that look like them. They often spend their reading class reading fantastic short stories, but none rooted in their lives.
As we enter Black History Month, I am incredibly reflective on my students and their experience in America.
As a teacher of minority and inner city students, I want to ensure they have a continued understanding of their realities. I would love a class set of the book Ghost Boys to ignite my students urgency to enact change in our school, community, city and more. I want them to understand that we are still fighting the fight for equality for all people in America, and that all heroes started in a classroom just like them.
