Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school is a small Title I high school located in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn. We are located in "Asthma Alley," and are sandwiched between two major urban bridges - the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.

All of my students are recent arrivals to the United States and English Language Learners (ELLs).

They come from every part of the globe seeking a new life of opportunity and freedom here in the United States. They come with the hope that education will allow them to meet their full potential.

Many receive public assistance; many others are barely surviving. Yet, my students are expected to meet the same educational standards as more affluent students of New York.

My proposal is to provide all of my students with the basic supplies one needs to complete all of their classwork and lab assignments in class. Items like composition notebooks, pencils and pens, sharpeners and erasers are in constant demand. We also use Ziploc bags to serve as pencil cases to keep all of their supplies together.

Students often lose or forget to bring pens and pencils, while others simply cannot afford to purchase basic school supplies. My task is to eliminate this issue. Hence I am requesting pens, pencils, sharpeners, and erasers to help my students start off on the right foot.

Your act of kindness and generosity will go a long way in eliminating this obstacle to the learning process and will be long remembered by our students. Students will also know that there are people in their community who care about them and their education.
