This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I currently teach English at a small high school in Manhattan, where most of the students come from difficult backgrounds and live well below the poverty line.

With the pandemic ravaging their communities, the need for books and supplies is even more pronounced.

My students, largely African American and Hispanic, are bright, enthusiastic individuals who genuinely enjoy learning. Many of them struggle with learning disabilities, which have presented new challenges during this time.

My Project

In order to combat this problem and teach my students good organization and note-taking skills to prepare them for college, I am requesting notebooks (one for each student). Students will use this composition notebook to write their essays and revisions, for vocabulary study, and for classwork. The colored copy paper will be used to make manipulatives to make the notebooks interactive and more engaging. In my experience, this helps reach all learners and ensures that everyone has the chance to succeed. Having a dedicated English notebook will not only help students become more organized, a skill that will be utilized throughout their lives, but will enable them to see themselves as scholars and take ownership of their work.
