My classroom is actually a large library that serves over six hundred students. Children attending my elementary school are required to take Accelerated Reader quizzes on the books they read. My goal is to provide them with books that capture their interests.
My students come from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds and range in age from kindergarten to sixth grade.
They attend a suburban elementary school in an area in which some students live in poverty. My students love to visit the library and look for new and interesting books.
My Project
My students enjoy reading books that they can relate to in some way. Since our school is located next to a very large city park that includes nearly two dozen baseball and softball fields along with large practice fields for soccer and football it is very common for our students to participate in at least one of these sports. My students routinely request sports books, and I would love to be able to provide more books from which they can select.
Donations to this project would improve my classroom because high-quality books would be added to our library collection.
Students would have more books from which to choose when they ask me to show them the nonfiction sports section.
