Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 3rd grade students enter my urban classroom with many challenges...about 30% of them and their families speak another language...many of their parents have limited education backgrounds themselves...and poverty means that there is often not enough money for food, let alone books.

Yet my students are hungry for more than food, they love learning and, with some encouragement, start to develop a love for reading in my book-rich, literacy-based classroom.

Through book fairs and garage sales, I have built a large classroom library that I am proud of and almost daily I receive a request to allow a student to bring a book home so they have something to read.

My Project

I want to be able to grant these delightful requests with "Weekend Book Bags"- a bag containing a high quality book, related questions and activities and a fun item, such as a snack or stuffed animal to enjoy with the book. My hope is that these book bags will not only bring joy to my students, but to their families as well. Having bilingual books will allow many of my students to read with their parents and encourage literacy in two languages! The questions and activities will help parents to be active participants in their child's education and development and promote healthy discussion and quality family time.

I believe these book bags will help the love of reading students develop in my classroom to expand and extend into their home lives as well...touching parents, brothers, sisters, cousins, grandparents, neighbors, etc with the power and pleasure found in a good book.
