Take Home Readers Needed

My students need books for the individual book bags that they can read at school and books they can practice at home with.

My Students

Reading can open a child's imagination to a completely different world than they live in. They can escape and not be worried about if they will have food for dinner, warm clothing to wear, if mom/dad will be home tonight, or what violence is taking place around them. Reading can be their safe place.

I teach kindergarten in a Title One School.

All of my students this year would qualify for the free or reduce lunch program. I currently have 21 students in my classroom. Ten of those students do not have English as their first language. Two of my students have witness one of their parents killed in front of them. I also have one student who physically has trouble communicating and requires a lot of extra assistance. My parents this year truly want to participate and help their child learn but either lack the resources needed to help them read or lack the knowledge of "how" to help assist their child in the reading process. My students all have a desire and a will to want to be successful readers. I want to help them by supplying them with take home readers on their level that they can practice at home with.

My Project

I would like to use these fiction and non fiction readers to place in the students' individual reading bags that they can use during library centers, free choice, writing (to write about what they have read), and most importantly to take home and practice with. I would like to be able to send home real books that the students will enjoy reading but also something the parents can read and practice with their child on.

With your help my students will gain that love of reading, desire of reading, and the ability to practice their reading to become truly life time learners.

Kindergarten is the foundation of the reading process. I want this foundation to be rock solid with every possible opportunity they can have. Please help me make these students life time readers.
