My students need 26 books sets to create a reading library where they can check out books and take them home to practice their reading.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"We love to read!" My students are so excited about learning how to read, but many of them do not have access to books at home. Please help us to take our reading beyond the classroom.
My students include first through fifth graders.
They come to the reading lab daily for reading intervention as they are struggling readers. Although many of my students are below grade level in reading, they come to reading lab happy and anxious to learn the strategies necessary to help them improve.
Each day, we begin our session with a daily read, which is basically reading a fluency passage. The children are given one minute to read as much as they can and their score is recorded. It is amazing to see their growth from Monday to Friday. They feel so much pride and success when they see their fluency scores go up.
My students really have a desire to become better readers and I work hard to keep them motivated. Our school is located in a low socioeconomic area and these children lack exposure to so many things that we take for granted. Improving the reading skills for these children is the key to making a difference in their future.
My Project
Although it is nothing short of amazing to watch my students improve their reading skills in class, it would be even better if they had literature at home to practice their newly acquired skills. How nice would it be for them to read a book aloud to family members or quietly read to themselves just before bedtime. I would really like to make this happen for my students.
If provided with take home library books, I would let students check out books just right for their level along with book logs and special book marks so that they could read at home. I believe this would truly make a difference on Mondays as the students come back a little rusty from not having books at home to practice with. My goal is for my students to learn to become confident, independent readers and I feel that the more exposure they have to reading in school as well as outside of school, the closer they will be to reaching that goal.
Reading is truly one of the major keys to success.
The ability to take books home and read will allow my students to continue to grow and develop their reading skills. I want them to be able to compete with and have the same opportunities as children that are fortunate enough to have the support and exposure to reading that my students are missing out on. Having consistent, daily access to literature will definitely make a difference in the reading success of my students.
