Take Home Books (Part 2)

Help me give my students who struggle with reading just right books they can read independently.

My Students

Our virtual learning school year has gotten off to a great start! My 3rd graders are amazing kids. They have been logging into Zoom every day, participate in new lessons, and are game for this whole new world of school.

This project will provide books for students to read at their independent reading levels.

Many of my students prefer to read physical books as opposed to ones on the screen, and we can build community by sending the same books to students so they can have book clubs!

We are an urban school that celebrates diversity. Our student population includes a mix of African American, Latino, and Asian Pacific Islander students. We serve English Language Learners, support special needs through inclusion, and provide strong social-emotional support to all students. Additionally, over 75% of the students attending our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

My Project

I have a handful of students who are reading far below grade level. They need to have physical books at their reading levels so they can engage in independent reading like their classmates. Now that I know a little bit about them, I picked books around topics I know they will enjoy reading! My hope is that by providing more books at their reading levels, they will excel their reading skills and confidence!

In addition to just right level books, this project also includes non-fiction books for my entire class.

The non-fiction books will have multiple copies so students can read together in book clubs! They will be able to read higher level texts with the support from their classmates and be able to compare and contrast the various life cycles of their different animals. I hope this type of engagement will help their academic conversations and spark their curious minds to learn even more about their animals.
