Hello, I am a second grade teacher. For the past two years, the second graders teachers at my school have worked on creating a guided reading take home library for their classrooms. The purpose of the library is to supply every student with guided reading books on their level. Students check these books out from the teachers, take them home and read them, and then bring them back to school. They are then allowed to check new books out from the library.Currently, we have a very limited supply of take home books. In second grade, students are reading on seven different levels. In our present situation, we only have about 30 titles for each level. This is not enough books to make this program a nightly success. We are requesting 75 new books to place into the reading boxes. The books we chose are exciting and stimulating for the students to read. They are also books on several different levels. This program is a huge success for the following reasons. First, it supplies all students with at home reading materials. In the past, students said they could not read at home because they did not have any books to read. This is no longer a problem because of the take home library. Second, students reading level improves because they are reading books on their level. The books are not too easy or too hard for the student to read. Third, it builds self-confidence as students take pride in reading books to family members at home.
