Everyone is concerned about how students will learn this upcoming school year. There is so much uncertainty. One thing certain I do know is that I am going to love my new students coming into the 3rd grade, and I want to give them the best possible school year I can. Though students won't be able to physically attend school, we will learn together and lift each other up. Kids are learning all the time and constantly inspire us!
This project will provide books for students to read at their independent reading levels.
Many of my students prefer to read physical books opposed to ones on the screen, and we can build community by sending the same books to students so they can have book clubs!
We are an urban school that celebrates diversity. Our student population includes a mix of African American, Latino, and Asian Pacific Islander students. We serve English Language Learners, support special needs through inclusion, and provide strong social-emotional support to all students. Additionally, over 75% of the students attending our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
My Project
Students will each get to take home a bag of books at their current reading levels. With the increase of learning on a computer, it's important that students get a break from the computer screen and practice reading actual paper books.
Popular books they love will be in their hands.
Books that will support shared reading and strategy groups will also be sent to kids so they can continue to grow in reading.
This project also includes diverse and culturally relevant read-aloud books that will help to learn about inclusion and different cultures that represent our students. I hope these books will allow students to have conversations about what makes each of us different and celebrate our differences.
