I teach second grade at Houston Elementary in the Talladega City School System. Houston is a public school with a high population of low income students. Many of the students do not have their basic school supplies.
Reading is a major subject for second graders. Reading is taught from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. every day. It is taught whole group and small group based on reading level. The goal is to get all students reading on grade level. Students are required to complete a home reading log for homework every night. Many students do not complete the log because they do not have books at home to read.
The take home reading packs would solve this problem. The reading materials in the bags are grade level appropriate for my students. The packs also contain activities using the book for the students to complete. The take home packs would encourage my students to read.
Reading is an important skill for life. I stress the importance of reading to my students. You can also show them the importance of reading.
