This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Pre-K is always an high paced exploratory space. We are constantly observing and questioning. We want children to see how the world works through these natural explorations. We want them to see that change is natural, especially since they will be going through a big change soon - Kindergarten.
Our students attend a Title 1 school set within a diverse urban community.
Our Pre-K reflects that diversity racially, culturally, and financially. We have 72 children in our program. The range in abilities from children with special needs to gifted children. Our school teaches curriculum through a museum lens. We utilize museums and the worlds around us becomes our natural museum.
My Project
I am requesting 2 Carolina Butterfly Sanctuaries, 1 Butterfly refill kit, and 4 Painted Lady Life Cycle model sets.
We are beginning our final unit of the year. It involves change and transitions. We learn about what changes happen during the Spring and our own lives as we get ready for Kindergarten. We use butterflies as our link between the two. We observe the natural progression and metamorphosis of the caterpillar into the butterfly. Then we talk about we have grown and changed and we will fly in Kindergarten. This is an integral part of our science and social studies curriculum.
The social-emotional health of a Pre-K child is very important.
We want to make the transition into Kindergarten easier. Comparing their impending change to something they understand makes their experience easier to process. They also begin to build more understanding of nature and change in the scientific world. They will start to see links between all aspects of their lives.
