Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach science in a large, urban public school district to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders in the Midwest. My students live in an area with small or NO backyards, with little space to explore their outdoor environment safely.

We have an oasis in the middle of our neighborhood - a beautiful fenced in outdoor classroom with many trees, plants, bird feeders and benches. Due to state testing requirements, we are not able to use the outdoor classroom as much as my students would like. Just last week, my students asked, "Can you take us out to the outdoor classroom during our lunch or after school?" Since THEY have shown an interest in going to the outdoor classroom more to do science activities, I am taking them out on my lunch periods with trowels and art supplies to discover the wonder behind worms, pillbugs and grasshoppers.

Research shows that children spend virtually no time in unstructured play outside anymore, and they in turn do not feel connected to their environment. It is my hope that through unstructured play with the right tools, I can foster a love for our Earth. This will empower my students to become stewards of their environment. The tools they need are simple: art supplies to do sketches of what they see, bug viewers, hand lenses, sifters to sift soil, things to help my students explore the Earth. Once students learn to love the outdoors, they will want to take care of it.

We grow carrots in our outdoor classroom. When my students pulled them out of the ground in the fall, you would have thought they were seeing a miracle...they had NO IDEA that a carrot grew like that. They were AMAZED, you should have heard the sounds they made. These are students whose parents are afraid to let them play outside in their own yards. You can make it possible for children to learn about plants, insects and trees by studying the real thing, not a picture in a book. They will be able to observe birds, insects and plants in a safe place, shouldn't all children have that type of opportunity?
