My Students
In my music class, students are playing, dancing and on the move, but sometimes we need to just sit down and engage our minds. This can be a difficult task for some.
I teach pre-kindergarten through third grade music in a small Title I school district in New Jersey.
Teaching students this young requires giving them many ways to experience music using multiple modalities. Most of the time we are up out of our spots and using our whole bodies. Sometimes, we need to sit in order to concentrate on singing properly, to play an instrument, or to listen to a story.
My Project
Sitting down and focusing can be a challenging task for some of my students that need constant movement. With two Hokki Stools, these students can enjoy the best of both worlds - they can engage their muscles in a non-disruptive way, which will in turn allow them to concentrate more fully. Singing and playing small instruments while sitting can be enjoyed by them. Listening and participating in conversation will be fun for them. A table in my classroom will serve many functions. When we have centers, it will serve as a listening or art center. When we are writing, those students who have trouble using clipboards will have a large surface to lean on. This furniture will allow my students to focus on the music, and not worry about comfort and accessibility!
Suddenly, being asked to sit down will no longer be a daunting challenge for some of my students.
Now they will be able to sit and move, activating body and mind. With this table and stools, I can just imagine how they will grow leaps and bounds as musicians. They will be able to concentrate so that they can fully appreciate the task at hand, and their classmates will no longer be distracted by their movements.
