I teach first grade. The age of the students range from 6-7 years old. We know that little learners cannot sit still for long periods of time.
First graders need movement all day long.
Flexible seating will give them that opportunity. The flexible seating options would allow students to take ownership of their learning. Flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking.
This project would benefit all students in my classroom. Rules on how to use the chairs would be reviewed from day one.
My Project
We were already fully funded for flexible seating once. I asked for 2 wobble stools, 2 bean bag chairs, and 4 yoga balls. It was amazing when the packages started to arrive! We quickly learned that the stools were the best option for first graders! All of my students love the wobble stools. They are the perfect height and allow for just the right movement!
We love the bean bags in the reading area as well.
The tall student can use the yoga balls but it is tricky. We are going to pass those to another classroom (taller students!) who can definitely use them! Our hope (my dream) is to be able to have every student on a wobble stool! We know this is asking for a lot, but it is such a demand in my classroom! The changes with students and being able to focus and pay attention when sitting on a wobble chair is dramatic! I had to try one last time for more. Wish us luck!!!
