The students in my first grade classroom are between the ages of 6 and 7 years old. They primarily come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and attend a school that is located in a poor, rural area of South Carolina. Many students come from a single-parent household, in which the parent works more than one job and/or works double shifts. Because of this, the students spend a lot of time with older siblings and/or relatives after school, while parents are working to make ends meet. Our students are hungry to learn about the world and each other.
My Project
Children love to come to the carpet and enjoy a good story. As with anything, carpets get worn out and dirty over time. Our current carpet has seen its better days, and my students are in desperate need of a fresh, new carpet for our classroom.
Due to the current COVID 19 pandemic, it is especially important for us to have a large carpet that will allow our children to have their own space while also remaining socially distanced.
The Seating Circles Rug will provide each student with their own space during Interactive Read Alouds and during whole group instruction.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
