This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are musicians in every way. My kindergarten through sixth grade students create and perform music in English, Spanish, and languages from around the world. Many of my students are bilingual and we strive to have a culturally inclusive classroom.

My goal for my classroom is for students to have access to quality music-making materials.

Our school is located in a low-income neighborhood and the majority of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. My student's current financial realities should not dictate what educational materials are available to them. We are hoping to fill the gap between what our school resources are able to provide and what is available to students in high income neighborhoods.

My Project

Currently all of my Kindergarten through sixth grade students sit on a carpet for music class. My older students need flexible, modular seating for bucket drumming activities, choral rehearsals, and percussion activities.

We need seating that helps us make the most of the limited space in our music classroom, yet keeps older students comfortable.

My older students are still kneeling on the floor for bucket-drumming activities and my choir students sit on the carpet or stand for their hour-long rehearsal. Stacking stools will provide seating that is more developmentally appropriate, but when stored will take up less space than traditional classroom chairs.
