Do you remember what is was like when you took art in school? You were probably given some crayons, scissors, markers and paste, and were allowed to explore your feelings. It's a little different today. Art has it's "Blueprints" to follow, and we need to inspire our students interest.
I am a Special Education Teacher in New York, teaching the Blueprints for the Arts to grades Pre-K through 5th grade.
My students are in a Title One School and are learning a new program in art. This is my second year teaching it to them and have learned a lot from my students. I realize that they remember more about famous artists when they watch a short movie, in animated form, as well as listening to me read about it. My students are Learning Disabled in Special Education and do really well as visual learners.
My Project
Last year I was able to rent out a DVD about a famous artist. I always read to them, and then we try to do a technique similar to the artists. I saw a significant change in memory after they saw the DVD. It captured their attention, and was short, which is great for short attention span students. They became really inspired and did wonderful paintings, all unique and creative. My students were able to learn and recall the information by watching the DVD.
I'm trying to get seven DVDs on Getting To Know The Artist for my Special Education students.
Please help support my students in the arts, and give them the chance to learn to love art. Art history plays an important role in the curriculum that I'm teaching them. Your support will have a broad impact on my students to "Take A Look" and really see who this artist was.
