My Project

Comic books and graphic novels have nudged themselves into mainstream literature and are hopefully here to stay! I believe this medium is an excellent way to help struggling and uninterested students work on becoming better and life-long readers. Students who aren't strong readers (the majority of the students in my class) often become discouraged from reading traditional novels. They find books recommended for their age too difficult but feel embarrassed to read books with pictures and/or fewer words.

Graphic novels are a great way to encourage and promote literacy for struggling readers!

When reading comic books or graphic novels, children often slow down to look at the images and text to fully digest what is happening in the plot. This helps to boost comprehension. Comics and graphic books provide reluctant readers with less embarrassing, yet level-appropriate options to read. In addition, this particular medium allows students, but especially those who struggle, to feel a more consistent sense of accomplishment and pride when a book is completed because these novels are typically less of an undertaking to finish.

In addition to promoting literacy, comics and graphic novels help to bring art education back into the classroom. This medium also brings the youth culture into the classroom, which helps to engage students. Graphic books are great for visual learners as well. The illustrations provide this type of learner with an opportunity to successfully decode and decipher literary elements.

With these new books, my students will have a variety of options—at levels appropriate for them—to choose from during our independent reading activities. One of the best ways to improve reading ability is to practice and to keep reading. These books will provide my students with the opportunity to grow as readers.
