Help me give my students the opportunity to read contemporary, thought provoking, diverse books. I teach at a mostly Hispanic middle school that is Title 1, and I want class sets that represent my students.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
These novels are at the level that my middle school students need. But more than that, I want texts that are representative of my students and thought provoking. These two novels show Hispanic and African American protagonists - which is the makeup of my student body. We have books like The Giver and Stargirl, but they do not see themselves in these pages. The novel Ghost Boys will allow us to have deep, difficult conversations about tragedies through history, such as the killing of Emmitt Till. I even hope to do some cross curricular work with our social studies department, adding depth to our discussions about the text. My kids learn best when the book is put into context, and Ghost Boys is a perfect cross curricular opportunity. What makes my students special? They're funny, and they come to school every day regardless of what is happening in their homes. School is a sanctuary where they can put aside family issues. I want to provide them with good books and discussions so that they can both escape and see other worlds, other adolescents who struggle and conquer. My kids rise to the occasion when I give them high expectations, and I think reading and writing about what they've read achieve that goal.
