My Students

My classroom is performance oriented with a stage, a full set of risers, and more instruments than you would expect in the average elementary classroom. We make music with our own hands and breath, and we do it well. I'm in my sixth year at this school, and in the time I've been here, my students have become multi-instrumentalists on the bass, mandolin, piano, and drums. Some students like to switch around between the instruments, while others have "specialized" and concentrate all their learning on just one. Either way is fine by me, as long as they're learning and enjoying music and school.

My Project

We have an instrument for every type of personality my classes may throw at me. I like to get my students hands on experience with them as often as possible. If we want to melt some faces off by fifth grade, we need to have ample playing time. No one ever learned an instrument by just watching others. However, if students aren’t already beat competent before they pick up a bass, guitar, or sit behind the drum set, they will struggle.

This 5 book and CD set will provide my students with a variety of experiences in learning rhythmic dancing which will ensure they are beat competent before playing the big instruments.

Dancing is a whole body activity that works their large motor skills, engraining the concept of “beat” into their whole body. Dancing is also a physical activity that will allow my classes to expend energy in a productive way. They’ll be learning beat and staying physically active. We also recently received a class set of squishy balls that we can use with the CDs to play rhythm games in addition to dancing. Thank you for helping us feel the beat in our hands and feet!
