This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember how it felt the first time you read your favorite book all by yourself? My 30 first graders are eager to know that feeling, and just need a little help to get there.
I teach enthusiastic first graders in an inner-city school in Illinois.
My students are predominantly Hispanic and come from low-income families. All of my students receive free lunch, and over half are bilingual, speaking Spanish at home with their families.
Several of my students struggle with letter sounds, vocabulary, and comprehension. These students are emergent readers who need some extra support to reach their grade level in reading. Many of these students speak English as a second language and need additional instruction to boost their language skills. I read with these children daily, but want to give them extra practice and build their confidence as readers.
My Project
LeapFrog Tag Reading Systems help provide students with an engaging reading experience that also supports their literacy development. Each pen-shaped device works with up to 30 special Tag books. When students read the text of each book, they can use the pen to have pages of the book read to them. As students become more confident in their abilities to read, they can use the pen to point to individual words to hear the word read aloud. Hearing words while reading them in print will help my students learn new words, make connections between letters and sounds, and become more fluent readers.
The Tag books that I am requesting are high-interest books that my students love, including Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Fancy Nancy. These interesting books will boost reading motivation while also providing students with exposure to rich vocabulary and story lines.
By supporting this project, you will provide my young learners with the tools they need to become independent, confident, and motivated readers.
These materials will help improve individual reading levels as well as foster a love of reading.
