Kindergarteners that would rather read than draw? That is actually the case in my classroom. I teach sixteen fantastic and motivated Kindergarten students in suburban Maryland. Although they come from a wide range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, they share many similarities. Their love of reading is one of them.
My students were so pleased when we received a set of Tag Readers and the accompanying Children's Classic Storybooks recently. They love these books, and not only use them during literacy centers, but also during indoor recess and free time. It is so encouraging to see my students so engaged in the Tag Readers, which are such a valuable resource since they help students decode the books. However, we only have six book titles--Olivia, Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom, The Little Engine That Could, Ozzie and Mack, Fancy Nancy at the Museum, and Click, Clack, Moo, Cows That Type.
I would love to be able to provide my students with more Tag Reader books. In particular, the Phonemic Awareness series would be great for the beginning of Kindergarten! This series allows students to familiarize themselves with the sounds within words--an important pre-reading skill. These books would allow my students to become proficient in recognizing common sounds within words, which would help them connect this concept to the sounds that specific letters make later on in reading.
Your help will make it possible for my students to become competent and independent readers. Thank you for helping to ensure that they enjoy learning--now and in the future!
