My students need a set of four Tag readers, a Tag super speller, beginning blends, and a Tag book for them to read.

My Students
I teach a group of 16 second grade students. We focus on making sure every student is on grade level in reading and math. I currently have four students who are not able to independently read. The Tag reading system will allow them to independently read and start to recognize words.
We are located in a rural school corporation.
Some of my students come from homes with nonreaders. In our society that is a tragedy. It is important for me, as a second grade teacher, to give every student the gift of reading. I am working with these students as much as possible giving them as much individual attention as I can, but in a classroom with 16 students individual attention is not always an option. With the Tag reading system they would be able to do what I am able to do individually, independently.
My Project
During reading I allow students to listen to books on tape. This helps the student with reading comprehension, but doesn’t always encourage them to follow along and begin to recognize words. The Tag reading system requires the student to run the pen over each word before it will read the text. Some students are not able to recognize groups of letters as words. This system will require them to begin to recognize that groups of letters form words.
By second grade students should be able to read.
It is vital to the success of their education that that they are able to read. By the time a student is in third grade they are required to read in every subject. Our state has a new law that the students must pass the ISTEP, our state required test, to move from grade 3 to 4. It does not matter if the student has already been retained. This means that some students may be held back two grade levels, or could be 13 years old before they leave the elementary school. Please help me ensure that my students are readers and therefore successful students.
