Working in a technology driven society can be challenging. It can be even more challenging when you have not been given the proper exposure to the great advancements of today. I want to give my students in Chicago the same opportunities to be successful.
I teach first grade on the South side of Chicago.
My school is located in a high-crime, high-poverty neighborhood. Often, the outside factors of our neighborhood are brought into the school. We are a smaller school with a lot of challenges, but we have a great group of kids who want to become something and are working towards that at our school.
My Project
My students are eager, energetic first graders who are absorbing the excitements life has to offer. With that energy comes challenges in the classroom to keep them focused at such a crucial learning time. During our literacy workstations, I am constantly looking for opportunities to keep them engaged and learning at the same time. With the tag readers incorporated into our literacy workstations, my students will be able to practice their fluency and receive additional reading support. They will have opportunities to read text with the guidance of the tag reader and work on word work.
As stated before, this will give my students additional opportunities to engage with literacy in another context.
It's wonderful to find ways to use technology in the classroom that also provide students with some foundational skills at the same time.
