My Project

My elementary and middle school libraries are warm, vibrant hubs in Astoria, Queens. We have fish, frogs, an herb garden and event an astronaut corner to blast off into reading! Not all children grow up with the opportunities to fall in love with reading at home, and some kids think they don't like books. I fill our library with animals and plants they want to visit and care for, so they become addicted to the library space, and soon find a book they want to take home!

We will embark on research projects about the aquatic animals in our library.

Students are very excited and curious about animals, so they will ask many questions and I will invite them to read books and look at digital resources to write "Feed and Caring" brochures and fun fictional stories about their animals. We will host beta fish and learn about the female vs. male behavior (males cannot live together without fighting but females can), and we'll study their dietary habits, how they stay healthy and happy how they grow over the life cycle. We will also adopt hermit crabs and learn about their behavior and how their shells grow along with their bodies. We will observe the animals and take notes and make list of questions to answer. Children will write and illustrate booklets to help the school community care for our pets.

Students fall in love with research when there's a hands-on component. Our library has a magical aquatic animal collection that draws students in like a magnet and I'm thrilled to offer city students this opportunity.
