Tactile Learning Tools for Students with Visual Impairments
My students need tactile resources such as tactile sight word cards, numbers, and letters to increase their learning in math and reading. These resources will support students who have visual impairments.

My Students
Some of our students who have visual impairments continue to have difficulty connecting with our lessons. Imagine the power of tactile materials that would help our students engage with our Math and Reading lessons.
I am fortunate to work with the most amazing group of kindergarten - second grade students who come to school ready to work each day.
These students have been identified as having moderate to severe disabilities. They are smart, funny, hard working, and continue to push past the limits that others place on them.
Our school is a Title I school which also has a high English language learner population; many of my students are English language learners. We have a strong community of families that are a strong part of our classroom communities.
Our classroom team works hard to help the students transition to school and focus on life skills, social skills, personal health, academics, and inclusion. We collaborate with a general education first grade class to build friendships, work on academics, and ensure inclusion for all students.
My students have had an amazing school year, and as we prepare for the upcoming school year I hope to continue to search for more resources that will better serve our students with visual impairments.
My Project
Our classroom begins with the Kindergarten curriculum with pre-academics, letter and number recognition, counting, addition, phonics, and comprehension among other things.
We work hard to utilize all of our manipulatives and materials to accommodate all lessons for students on an individualized basis.
Some of our students who have visual impairments utilize other methods of learning. I have requested tactile resources such as tactile Sight-Word cards, numbers, and letters to increase my students' learning in Math and Reading. These resources will support students who have visual impairments. By using tactile materials we can work with students to learn their letters and numbers, then on to sight words using tactile cards they can feel.
We are constantly working to find resources for all of our students as individuals, and I truly feel that these tactile materials will serve several of our students who have visual impairments. These resources will help our visually impaired students work with staff to physically feel their lessons in Reading and Math.
We have been so grateful for all of the DonorsChoose projects that have been funded for our students.
All of the resources we have received have made a difference for our students' learning.
It is so important for us to be able to accommodate and individualize lessons for all of our students, and I truly feel that these tactile resources will enable our students with visual impairments to participate in our lessons and curriculum. It is so awesome to see students engaging and learning!
